Urmila Devi: Inspiring India Through Education and International Sporting Excellence

Balancing the responsibilities of an educator and an international athlete, Urmila Devi continues inspiring students and society through dedication, discipline, and determination.

There are teachers who educate students, and then there are mentors who lead by example and inspire generations through their own achievements. Urmila Devi belongs to the latter category. Based in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, she is an Acting Head Teacher, athlete, and international gold medalist known for her extraordinary contribution to education and sports.

Born on 18 June 1975, Urmila Devi has been serving under the Basic Shiksha Parishad, Uttar Pradesh since 10 February 1999. Alongside her dedication toward teaching and student development, she has proudly represented India in international athletics competitions.

A Life Dedicated to Education

For more than 25 years, Urmila Devi has worked tirelessly to educate and empower children from rural and economically weaker backgrounds. Currently serving at Upper Primary School Khemaipur, Bhadohi, she focuses on both academic excellence and sports development among students.

Her dedication toward student growth has helped many children achieve success in scholarship examinations, wrestling, Kho-Kho, and other competitive activities at state, national, and international levels.

Under her guidance:

• 11 students were selected in the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) examination between 2022 and 2025

• Students regularly participate in state and national-level Kho-Kho competitions

• Several students have won medals in wrestling competitions at state and international levels

International Sporting Achievement

Alongside her teaching career, Urmila Devi has also built an inspiring identity as an athlete specializing in Race Walk competitions.

Her most remarkable achievement came during the Veteran Games Singapore 2019, where she represented India in the 40+ age category and won the Gold Medal in the 5 km Race Walk event on 7 July 2019.

This achievement brought immense pride not only to her district and state but also to the nation. In recognition of her success, she was honoured by the District Magistrate (DM) and Superintendent of Police (SP), while her department also granted her paid special leave.

• Gold Medal — Veteran Games Singapore 2019

• Gold and Silver Medal — 20th Master Athletics Championship 2018–19

• Multiple Gold Medals in Race Walk Championships between 2018 and 2020
